When a child is born their spine and nervous system is brand new. This is like having a fresh canvas to create an amazing work of art that can be appreciated for many years to come. Their skeleton begins as cartilage and the majority of the transition to bone occurs in the first 15 years of their lives. As their spine continues to mature it is important to make sure that the bones are in their proper position to allow them to form perfectly. It is also important to make sure that their nervous system is free from intereference since their brain is communicating both information on function, and more critically, growth and development. As adults we remember youth as an easy time that was stress free. Unfortunately, that perspective is not an accurate one. Kids become subluxated from the birth process, falls as they learn to walk, accidents, carrying heavy back packs, and so many more occurrences.

There is research to support chiropractic care for children can help with many ailments, such as ear infections, bed wetting, and colic. This all goes back to the vertebral subluxation complex causing nerve interference which decreases the brains communication with these parts of the body. Through very gentle and specific adjustments of their subluxations it is possible to help prevent many of the complaints we have as adults.

Now ask yourself how you might feel today if you grew up with a spine in total alignment…

Chiropractic and Pregnancy

Pregnancy can be one of the most beautiful experiences for a family. It is a display that reminds us of just how smart our body truly is. It takes two cells and grows them piece by piece into a little human being. This is one of the most critical times in a woman’s life that she needs a nervous system that is functioning at 100% to create her child. From the time fertilization takes place there are several new hormones being released to prepare the body for what’s to come. These physical and chemical changes are necessary for both the child and the mother to be able to adapt and develop over the 9 month pregnancy. As you would imagine a kink in the communication system of the body would cause discomfort, increased stress levels, and lower adaptability. This can lead to dystocia, or difficult labor.

Dystocia is caused by inadequate uterine function, pelvic contraction, and baby malposition. The correction of sacral subluxation, or misalignment, can have positive effects on all of these causes. Sacral subluxation causes nerve interference , pelvic misalignment, and the torsion and tightening of specific pelvic muscles and ligaments. The resulting tense muscles and ligaments and their poor effect on the uterus may prevent the baby from comfortably assuming the best possible position for birth(1).

Dr. Larry Webster was a chiropractor who taught a technique that involved a specific sacral analysis and sacral adjustment, as well as a soft tissue release that was meant for everyone. Through his experience he had several pregnant women report to him that previous to care their baby’s positioning was less than optimal for birthing, and that his chiropractic adjustments changed that. Today we still make the same observations about the effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments on the proper functioning of the pelvis, in turn creating potential for safer, easier births. This led to the naming of this particular chiropractic application as The Webster Technique. Dr. Shelley is certified in Webster Technique through the International Pediatric Chiropractic Association, which is the association that the late Dr. Webster founded.
